Is presented to individuals, to groups or to organizations in recognition of their commitment, their efforts or their contribution in unusual circumstances when challenging or exceptional situations occur.
They are awarded only on rare occasions.
The Governor General’s Commendation for Outstanding Service is awarded to the community of Fort McKay in recognition of the extraordinary efforts made in the face of devastating wildfires in May 2016.
During the peak of the wildfires, the entire community welcomed thousands of evacuees and provided them with food and temporary shelters.
The community of Fort McKay demonstrated initiative and selflessness, and is to be commended for its tremendous spirit and the remarkable example it has set.
