RE: White Spruce Project Failed Consultation with FMFN
Dear Sir/Madam,
We are writing to inform you that TransCanada Corporation has failed to adequately consult with Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) on their proposed White Spruce Pipeline. This pipeline is in close proximity to the community of Fort McKay and located in an ecologically sensitive area as well as a pristine caribou habitat. In addition, it carries significant impacts on the traditional and cultural rights of our community members.
The Nation has a long history of successfully working with oil and pipeline companies in the sustainable development of oil sand project. Over the past 30 years we have worked to find a balance between environmental preservation and oil sands development.
We tried in earnest to work with TransCanada to reach agreement on this project but TransCanada was unwilling to work with us. As a result, we do not support this project and we ask that you respect the Nation’s position and do not proceed with involvement in this project.
Should you decide to proceed your company is not permitted to come onto reserve land.
The Nation owns a portfolio of 9 companies which provide services to oil and pipeline companies. Through our Board positions and ownership stakes in these companies we have advised them of the situation.
Fort McKay is also home to numerous entrepreneurs who own their own companies. FMFN does not own interests in these companies and therefore leaves it to their individual decisions whether they will participate in work on White Spruce. Their participation in no way means that FMFN supports this project.
Fort McKay First Nation
